Fellow Lafayette resident, Daniel Cormier advises Dustin Poirier to avoid fighting Tony Ferguson as he has a better opponent in mind.

Last Saturday, Dustin Poirier defeated Dan Hooker and retained his spot as a top contender. However, he is somewhat trapped. Despite securing an incredible win last week, the “Diamond” cannot fight for the title next. Why? Well, he challenged Khabib Nurmagomedov for the belt less than a year ago.
Many believe that Poirier should stay active to fight for the championship soon. ESPN’s Ariel Helwani suggested that Poirier should face off against Tony Ferguson in his next match. However, Daniel Cormier believes that he should not fight Ferguson next.
“It’s a great fight … It’s gonna get him where he needs to be to earn another title shot, but for people that know Dustin, we’d prefer to see something different,” Daniel Cormier told Ariel Helwani.

Cormier thinks that Conor McGregor would be an ideal opponent for Poirier. The duo fought in 2014 at featherweight. Unfortunately for Poirer, he never made it out of the first round.
“[McGregor] would be good. I’d like to see him fight Conor because it’s a different fight today. Dustin’s big, strong. And just like when we saw TJ Dillashaw cut down to 125 [pounds], when you’re cutting that massive amount of weight, sometimes that chin doesn’t hold up.”
Indeed, both men drained their bodies to make the featherweight limit. A rematch at 155 lbs would be a completely different story. Besides that, Poirier and McGregor have evolved a lot since their last encounter.
“Conor landed a beautiful shot but [Poirier] was wearing his time at 145 out. I’m not saying he beats Conor. I don’t know … It’s a much better fight today than it was back then, partly due to the fact that he’s not depleting himself as much.
“I’m talking as a guy that knows Dustin. I’d prefer to see one of those guys where it’s not just another train wreck.”
While most fans would love to see Poirier back in the cage soon, Poirier himself said that he is in no hurry. The 31-year-old wants to enjoy his life and take it slowly this time.
