Tony Ferguson’s fight at UFC 249 has seen innumerable interruptions. First, the venue was changed, then the opponent was changed from Khabib Nurmagomedov to Justin Gaethje. Later the event was canceled. It was seemingly back for a few days. However, the broadcaster’s request forced Dana White to stand down. Through all this ‘El Cucuy’ has been in absolute control. He declared he would make weight and did exactly that.

On Friday morning he messaged ESPN’s Ariel Helwani a picture of him on a scale having attained the Championship weight. UFC Heavyweight Daniel Cormier was all praise for the effort. He termed it a “boss move” and said a lot of other fighters including himself would not have done it.

Khabib Nurmagomedov would not have cut weight

“I love Khabib, but he wouldn’t do that. He wouldn’t make the weight for nothing. He wouldn’t suffer through that for no reason. Conor McGregor, he wouldn’t suffer through that for no reason,” says ‘DC’ and names a host of other fighters who would not have done it.

“Conor said great job Tony now put the other guy on the scale. But he wouldn’t have done it himself. He wouldn’t have gone down to weight for nothing. Mentally it’s so tough to do that, guys don’t do that. Tony Ferguson just did that. That’s a big deal.”

Cormier says he himself wouldn’t do that and termed the move by ‘El Cucuy’ as “a massive massive statement.” ‘DC’ adds it is crazy and requires discipline. He says that most fighters would have run to the nearest restaurant as soon as they heard the fight was off.

‘El Cucuy’s incredible effort will have won him even more admirers. The fighter was already lauded for accepting an Interim Title fight, thereby jeopardizing his hard-earned shot against ‘The Eagle.’

Will ‘El Cucuy’s efforts and determination lead him to a 13th consecutive win and see him fight for the title soon?

‘DC’ certainly thinks so. He said ‘El Cucuy’ will be dangerous for anybody as he is so disciplined and intune coming into the fight. He went through quarantine and never got off track.
