The UFC rankings get updated and altered regularly following PPVs and Fight Nights. However, eagle-eyed fans will notice one name at 4th in the Lightweight fighters rankings and 8th in the pound for pound rankings. It is that of former Champion Conor McGregor, who recently called time on his career. One fighter who remains peeved at ‘Notorious’ presence in the rankings despite his apparent retirement is Gilbert Burns.

Perhaps the UFC is not dismissing their biggest draw from the rankings, as he has a track record of returning. Following his first retirement in April 2016, ‘Notorious’ made history by becoming the first fighter to hold 2 belts simultaneously. Following his 2nd retirement, he returned and vowed to fight three times a year.

Moreover, McGregor attributes the retirement to being tired of waiting around. This leaves the door open to a return should something interesting come up. Though there will be people in place to prevent ‘Notorious’ from directly slotting into a title fight.
