Alistair Overeem proved once again why he deserves the tag of “The Demolition Man”. In the main event of UFC Fight Night 176, Overeem survived an early onslaught as he squared against Walt Harris and went on to win the bout. However, the fact that Overeem was able to, or rather, was allowed to survive the initial assault particularly caught the attention of Dominick Cruz.

Cruz went through a similar situation just about a week back. He locked horns with Henry Cejudo in the co-main event for UFC 249. Henry caught Cruz with a knee towards the end of round two and proceeded for a ground-and-pound.

While Cruz was still somewhat scrambling in an attempt to escape Cejudo, referee Keith Peterson called the competition to a halt. And Dominick was not happy about the stoppage.

He made it very clear to the referee that he did not agree with his decision. In fact, he has been quite upset about the stoppage.. And evidently; he is still not over it. In a peculiar tweet during the bout between Overeem and Harris, Cruz said:

“Loving this ref[.] Send him a gift basket.”

The bout between Overeem and Harris did not start so well for Overeem. Harris is well aware of the rampaging powerhouse that he is, and he used it to his advantage.

He scored a knockdown in the first round, followed by a devastating ground-and-pound. Overeem suffocated with pressure under the heavy barrage of strikes and continuously tried scrambling and getting out of the bad position. The point to note here is that the referee did not stop the fight, even though Harris was in a comfortably dominant position for quite some while.

The 1st round ended with both fighters on the ground and Overeem on the top. A disappointed Harris returned to his corner as the round-end signal sounded off.

Overeem quickly recovered, and after a few moments in the 2nd round landed a high kick right at Harris’ temple, which he quickly followed up with a huge left hand. Harris fell to the ground and Overeem capitalized by entering into a turtle position.

Thereafter, he landed blows to the side of Harris’ head, sometimes slipping a strike from under the arms to Harris’ chin. The referee finally called the fight to a halt after he saw enough. Overeem won the fight via TKO 3 minutes into Round 2.

What did you think of the fight? Do you agree with Cruz?
