Calvin Kattar is on a tear in the UFC featherweight division. The fighter claimed two wins in 2020 and positioned himself on the brink of a top-five ranking should he maintain his stupendous form. The sixth-ranked fighter has championship aspirations and has identified a way to reach the pinnacle of the division.
‘The Boston Finisher’ expressed interest in taking on the former champion Max Holloway. He said, “It’ll be an honor to share the octagon with him. I consider him one of the GOATs of the division. A win over him would be almost better than getting that belt around my waist.”
Such is the aura of ‘Blessed’ Holloway that even without the belt he remains a marquee opponent in the division. Kattar feels he the winner of a potential fight between himself and Holloway should take the No.1 contender’s spot.
‘The Boston Finisher’ said, “So I feel whoever beats Max next deserves a shot at the belt or at least gets first dibs. So at least me and him and an opportunity to make that fight happen. I’m game.”
The likes of Brian Ortega, Chan Sung Jung, Zabit Magomedsharipov, and Yair Rodriguez all feature on Fight Island in October and will try to earn the right to battle Alexander Volkanovski. Hence, they will strongly dispute Kattar’s statements.
Holloway is without an opponent and despite the polarising decision at UFC 251, he is set to spend some time away from the championship scene. However, Kattar has another option where he can fight Holloway.
Calvin Kattar open to coaching against Max Holloway on ‘TUF’
Kattar addressed the possibility of himself and the Hawaiian fighter serving as coaches in a season of TUF. He said, “It’d be great. You got a big name in Max, you got an up-and-coming prospect like myself, and I think we can have a lot of fun with an opportunity like that.”
TUF hasn’t held a season since 2018 and is supposed to return soon. Earlier, Israel Adesanya and Paulo Costa were rumored to be the coaches. However, ‘The Last Stylebender’s coach shut down those rumors.
Finally, Kattar addressed how having Max Holloway’s name on one’s list can enhance how the matchmakers view a fighter. He said, “A guy like Max… He’s one of the best to ever do it. There’s a lot of notoriety fighting a guy like that…Adding a guy like that to your resume, it’ll do a lot for you.”
Kattar is a young fighter on his way up in the UFC. Hence, his wanting to fight the biggest names is natural. Considering the state of the division, and the fight styles, fans could get on board with a Calvin Kattar vs Max Holloway fight.
