Thomas Almeida is back after a lengthy spell off. The Brazilian star last fought back in 2018, where he suffered a loss to fellow bantamweight Rob Font at UFC 220. At that time, he was one of the upcoming stars of the UFC. After suffering a TKO loss to Cody Garbrandt in 2016, he has recorded just one win in his last three fights.
‘Thominhas’ will aim to make it two wins in his last four as he opens this weekend’s main card. He spoke to the media to discuss his upcoming fight with Jonathan Martinez. The fighter believed that overcoming these difficulties has led him to become stronger and improve as a human being. He said, “No. I know how powerful my mind is…My time is now,”
The fighter added, “I’m super excited to fight again, especially here at Fight Island.”
Almeida was asked how mentally tough it was to be away and not compete. He replied, “Definitely the first moment was tough, but you have to deal with those situations in fighting and in life.”
‘Thominhas’ has also been active on social media, putting out videos to his fans showing different techniques. Upon being asked if this is something he is passionate about, Thomas replied, “Yes, I teach a lot and a lot of fans have texted me to show some techniques and moves.”
With a late opponent change, Almeida will now face Jonathan Martinez to open this week’s main card. When asked how he has dealt with the change in opponent, he replied, “I’m super strong in my mind and mentality. I was patient in waiting for the new opponent.”
Martinez was not around back in 2018 when ‘Thominhas’ last fought. He acknowledged that his team has been very careful and studied his opponent as he wasn’t aware of who he was and how he fought.
Almeida was one of the top bantamweight contenders last time around. Now, he is only thinking about his upcoming fight before rising in a stacked division. Do you see the Brazilian talent winning upon his return to the UFC octagon?
