By the fifth round, Ferguson’s face was almost unrecognizable. He took too much damage and left referee Herb Dean with no choice but to stop the bout. And award Gaethje the win, making him the interim lightweight champion.

Tony Ferguson wants a rematch with Justin Gaethje

Ferguson’s loss shook the MMA community. Even Tony himself admitted that he wasn’t ready for Gaethje. Hence, he is now calling for a rematch. Check out what he said when Gaethje tried to congratulate Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker for their fight.

It is highly unlikely that Ferguson will fight Gaethje next, as Gaethje will fight Khabib Nurmagomedov for the undisputed belt in a few weeks.

Besides that, Ferguson has absorbed over 100 significant strikes on his head. Fighting too soon could be catastrophic for him. As of now, Ferguson might not be in the position to fight for the title. But a win or two over top contenders will put him back in the conversation.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see him fight for the title after Gaethje either. We have already seen top contenders—for example, Yoel Romero—receive a title shot despite coming off a loss.
