Not everyone gets the opportunity to train in the same gym as their role models. However, the dream came true for Kayla Harrison, who trains alongside her hero, Amanda Nunes.

American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, is home to both Nunes and Harrison. The PFL champion claims that both Nunes and herself have a great relationship. The 29-year-old hails the UFC two-division champion as the greatest fighter ever.

“She’s my role model. She is one of the greatest combat athletes of all time and she’s who I aspire to be like. We’re very friendly and I like Amanda a lot. And I have so much respect for her. She’s the G.O.A.T,” exclaims Harrison while talking about her relationship with Nunes to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

The breakout star admits the fact that one of the biggest reasons for her choosing ATT is Nunes. And rightly so, for no one in their right mind would give up the opportunity to work shoulder to shoulder with one of the biggest stars in the same.

“For sure, 100%! I went there for a week when I was trying out different gyms. I went to Frankie Edgar’s gym. Then I came to ATT,” responds Harrison when asked if Nunes is the reason she joined ATT.

“I sparred her, and I had never been whupped on like that by a female. The next day, I had bruises all over my body, even on my stomach. I was like, ‘How? What? Did I get hit by a truck?'” said Harrison about their sparring session together.

The sparring session was a real eye-opener for the 2019 lightweight champion. It gave her clarity regarding the gym she should choose.

Kayla Harrison to Take on Amanda Nunes

Both fighters are at the top of their game. Therefore, there is a high chance that they meet each other in the octagon sometime in the future.

FIghters in MMA occasionally refuse to fight their own teammates, sometimes out of respect and sometimes out of fear of ruining their relationship. However, Harrison claims that she would never rule an opportunity like this out. It is not uncommon to see athletes take on their teammates, in her background, judoka.

The PFL is done for the year. However, their contract with Harrison guarantees her 2 fights in 2020. And she expects them to honor their contract. If not, she claims she will consider looking for fights elsewhere, as the PFL will have breached their agreement.

If Harrison does decide to leave the PFL, the UFC becomes a potential destination for the American fighter. This means it opens doors for her to take on Amanda Nunes, eventually.

“I don’t think that’s any time soon. And if it does happen. My hope is we can do it with mutual respect. And we don’t become Jorge and Colby. I would never want to be like that. I respect her too much. I’m still in the beginning of my career. I know I have a lot to prove to consider being ready to step in the cage with her.” says Kayla Harrison on a potential fight with Nunes.
