“Sometimes You Train Yourself to Fail”- Daniel Cormier Weighs in on Cowboy’s Loss to Conor McGregor
While talking about Donald Cerrone’s loss early this year, both Daniel Cormier and Ariel Helwani concurred that Cerrone’s recent comments about his state of mind going into the fight prove Stephen A. Smith right.
Smith faced a lot of flak from the MMA community after suggesting that Cerrone quit in the fight that lasted 40 seconds. The long-time journalist berated Cerrone for putting up an “atrocious performance” against McGregor.
Cormier admits that Smith put up a valid point. However, the way that he put his opinion forth is what Cormier feels was wrong.

“Stephen A isn’t in the MMA game enough or long enough to verbalize it in a way that the fight community understands. He was saying the same thing. And Donald essentially confirmed it,” said Daniel Cormier when talking about Smith’s opinion that attracted a wave of hate.
The pair go on to talk about a pattern that Cerrone has set up in which he chokes, every time he’s on the big stage. However, DC feels that it is not a lack of talent or skill that is plaguing Cowboy, it is his mentality.
“Yeah, it’s a trend. I think that Cowboy has been in so many big moments and sometimes you almost train yourself to fail. You start to expect it. And then you gotta start convincing yourself that it’s gonna be different this time,” said Cormier.
He feels that all of Cerrone’s problems boil down to the fact that he needs to be more confident. The way Cerrone goes into the biggest fights of his career expecting a loss, he loses even before the fight starts.

Many people have obvious tells and signs that give away the fact that they are worried about a particular situation. And Donald Cerrone is no different, he has his own set of tells that make it obvious that he’s nervous.
“Donald has tells. Like there are tells when he is starting to worry. And part of it is like you said, the black hat, over-excitement, also tying to become friends with the guys,” claims Cormier as he dissects Cerrone’s pre-fight tendencies.

It seems like Cerrone often goes into a fight on the back foot and when he comes back with a loss, it is not very surprising considering his mental environment going into the fight.
