“That Was a Hail Mary” – Daniel Cormier Makes a Surprising Statement Ahead of Trilogy With Stipe Miocic

Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic have a special rivalry between them. Both of them are highly competitive who absolutely hate losing. That hasn’t, necessarily, translated to a lot of trash-talking between the two. However, as both get closer to the biggest fight of their career, it looks like the environment is finally beginning to pick up some heat.

Daniel Cormier shocked the world when he stopped Stipe Miocic in the very first round of their initial meeting in 2018. While there was a bit of controversy with the eye pokes, nonetheless, most of the fans would agree that Cormier had the better of Miocic in the fight.

Even in the second outing, DC was leading on the judges’ scorecards during the first three rounds. However, Stipe showed that he had the will and the mind of a champion when he made adjustments in the fourth round. He realized that the body shot was the weapon that could propel him to regaining his belt.

Consequently, he left no stone unturned in drilling Cormier’s body with hard shots. Eventually, Cormier succumbed to the beating. Fans of Miocic would argue that the shots were evident of chinks in DC’s armor. However, the former double champion would tell you that it was Miocic’s desperation that led him to make that adjustment.

While talking to BT Sport, Cormier reflected upon the ending of the second fight. He is of the opinion that Miocic switched to the body only because everything else failed for him.

I should’ve prepared better. I should’ve been more in shape to fight. You know the reality is he made an adjustment. You only get to do that once, you can’t do it all the time. That was a Hail Mary. The Hail Mary was to go the body because everything else was not working. It worked. So it is what it is. I was very disappointed with myself,” Cormier said.

DC was also coming off a back surgery. It may have been one of the reasons why he couldn’t prepare up to his capacity. However, this time around he had ample time to get ready. While things may have been tougher due to the pandemic, the former Olympian would’ve surely given his everything to training for the trilogy.

The fight between Miocic and Cormier will headline UFC 252 which takes place on 15 August at the UFC Apex Centre.
