Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov may retire after a couple of more fights in the UFC. That said, a matchup between him and Georges St-Pierre would possibly determine the greatest grappler of all time in the promotion, if not the greatest fighter.

Both Khabib and GSP have been put side by side for the past few years, based on their fighting style and IQ. While the possibility of the matchup may not be too alluring, Khabib’s coach believes that it can happen.

Khabib’s head coach Javier Mendez recently sat down at the Hablemos MMA 5 to put a light on Khabib’s predicted future. When asked about a super-fight with GSP, Mendez appeared optimistic about the contest.

“He (Khabib) might do that because all the times that I was with him and his dad, they’ve talked about those things: two more fights, 30-0,” said Mendez. (translated by MMA Junkie)

The undefeated lightweight champion will defend his title against Justin Gaethje at the headliner of UFC 254. After that, he is most likely going to set foot for one more time in the cage.

Thus, Khabib’s farewell fight can bring him up against anyone. A few days back, the champion has desired to fight the person who would defeat Dustin Poirier, next. This will naturally put GSP out of the mix.

However, Khabib has also been open to facing the Canadian maestro throughout his career. If things fall in place as planned, Mendez believes that Khabib will seek the fight against GSP over anyone else.

“He doesn’t want that fight for money and that’s what his father wanted. He told me, ‘That’s what my father wants. What do you think coach?’ And I was like, ‘You know, if that’s what your father wants, we can do it, and if that’s what you want as well.’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah, I want to do it for my father, so I’m like, ‘Let’s do it,’ said Mendez.

Will GSP return to the UFC?

The former two-division champion hung his gloves after vanquishing Michael Bisping for the middleweight title at UFC 217 in 2017.

The 39-year-old has been linked with Khabib several times since then. While GSP has appeared interested in taking the fight, nothing has ever been materialized.

However, there are chances, however minor, that he will return and face ‘The Eagle’ in his departing bout. If it takes place, the contest will go down in the history books.
