One just does not become a part of the MMA Universe without coming across the name of Georges St-Pierre. The Canadian fighter is widely regarded as one of the best UFC fighters ever.

He dominated the Welterweight Division for as long as he was active. In Dana White’s own words, he is one of the rare fighters to retire from the top.

Even though he officially retired years ago, he came back in 2017 to fight Michael Bisping, the then Middleweight Champion. While everyone was afraid that he would tarnish his impeccable and glorious career by coming back after such a long time only to lose, he pushed aside all such fears. Even after a long exile, GSP gave a remarkable performance and put Bisping away in round 3 by choking him till he fell unconscious.

Reportedly, he was eyeing yet another comeback to the UFC. He was in talks with the UFC to face off with the undisputed Lightweight Champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov. In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, GSP spoke about the prospect of a fight with Khabib.

He explained that the UFC wasn’t really okay with the idea of a fight between the two, saying, “They [UFC] didn’t want to take the risk of me winning the title and then [vacate] it again. I didn’t [even] want it for the title. For me, it was because I consider Khabib, right now, to be the best fighter in the world.”

Carrying on with the interview, GSP said, “He [Khabib] wanted to fight me as well. So I thought it was a good fan-fight. You know, for the fans. [But] They [UFC] had other [plans] for Khabib. And I understand that.”

He went on to say that he took UFC’s hesitation to fix a fight between him and Khabib as a compliment. While the UFC wouldn’t mind making “The Eagle” fight someone with as huge a reputation as Georges St-Pierre, they would definitely mind if the said person actually won the title, only to vacate it later.

Moreover, Khabib remains undefeated with an unmatched record of 28-0-0. Thus, the fact that the UFC was actually hesitant to go ahead with the fight, which would most definitely provide huge commercial benefits [his last stint set a higher PPV record than McGregor vs. Mayweather], is a huge testament to GSP’s well-earned skills and reputation.

Who do you think will win in the fantasy bout between Georges St-Pierre and Khabib Nurmagomedov?
