Undefeated UFC lightweight king Khabib Nurmagomedov has begun intense training for his upcoming fight against the interim champion, Justin Gaethje.

Nurmagomedov has gone through a lot this year. The Dagestani warrior lost his father last month and had one of the most important fights of his career canceled at UFC 249. Although some fans would want him to take the year off, Khabib is unwilling to back down from a challenge. “The Eagle” has started training for his bout against Justin Gaethje.

Based on the clips, it seems like Khabib is focusing primarily on his wrestling and cardio. After all, he will need a good gas tank and consistent takedowns to deter Gaethje from firing on all cylinders. The non-stop takedown threat is one of Khabib’s strongest weapons. All he needs to do is take his opponent down and the rest is history.

Is Justin Gaethje the toughest opponent for Khabib Nurmagomedov?

Gaethje is a powerful striker with an incredible wrestling pedigree. “The Highlight” has enough power to put anybody’s lights out or significantly hurt them. However, “with great power, comes great responsibility.” And Gaethje must pace himself and pick his shots.

Unlike some of his previous fights, Khabib should not attempt to strike with Gaethje. That’s a game he won’t win unless Gaethje is severely compromised. Also, Nurmagomedov needs to be wary of Gaethje’s low calf kicks and force him to wrestle early in the fight.

There will be many opportunities for Khabib to take his opponent down as the American fighter walks forward with a high guard and constantly throws leg kicks from all directions. The fight should be very competitive for the first few rounds. Should it go past two rounds, the chances of Khabib winning the bout will increase dramatically.

Khabib last competed at UFC 242, where he defeated Dustin Poirier to retain the lightweight gold. His opponent, on the other hand, fought in May against perennial contender Tony Ferguson. It will be interesting to see Khabib battle after a year-long layoff and all the things he has gone through.

Will he suffer from ring rust? Will the death of his father play a role in his next fight? What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.
