Recently, news broke out that Khabib Nurmagomedov will not be able to make it for UFC 249. Although there have been talks about a replacement in Justin Gaethje, there is no confirmation. Welterweight Jorge Masvidal offered to step in, but not with the intention of fighting Tony Ferguson.

UFC 249 suffered a major setback when the lightweight champion announced that it is nearly impossible for him to make it out of his home country. Russia has suspended its aviation services due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Nobody is allowed to enter or leave the nation via flights.

Despite being in close contact with the Russian President Vladimir Putin, there isn’t much the fighter can do. ‘The Eagle’ also announced that the UFC is looking for a replacement and the card will likely take place in the United States itself.

Jorge Masvidal was quick to jump on his Twitter and offer to step in and save the card. Originally, he did not reveal who he wants to fight but a recent tweet revealed that he was referring to the welterweight champion – Kamaru Usman.

Masvidal claimed that it is the second time he has offered to fight Usman.

On multiple occasions, ‘Gamebred’ has referred to Usman as a “Crotch Sniffer.” This is a reference to the champion’s non-stop wrestling offense. Both Masvidal and Usman despise each other. They even had a public altercation in which could have ended up in a street fight.

Why Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal makes sense at UFC 249.

Jorge Masvidal won the BMF title last year against Nate Diaz. While most people were impressed by Masvidal’s performance, the welterweight champion was not. Since then, fans have been waiting in anticipation for a fight between the two.

On the other hand, Usman proved his dominance when he defended the title against Colby Covington in a five-round war. A victory over Masvidal will help cement his legacy even further. Masvidal now has a legitimate chance to capture the welterweight title and shut down the naysayers who call him a “fake champion”.

Masvidal, being the explosive striker, could surely pull off some tricks. Also, a gold belt next to a silver one would make for an awesome collection.
