The UFC tried to make this fight happen five times and was unsuccessful all five times. Both Khabib and Tony have pulled out two times each from the fight.
Most recently, the fight was scheduled to take place at UFC 249, in the United States. However, because of the restrictions implemented due to the Coronavirus, Khabib could not fly to the US from Russia.
Tony was then matched up against Justin Gaethje for the interim title. Most fans hoped that Tony would secure the win, just so a fight with Khabib could finally take place.
However, after a devastating loss to Justin Gaethje, hopes of a match between the two were dimmed. Leading up to the fight against Justin Gaethje, ‘The Eagle’ mentioned that he thought Tony was ‘finished,’ given his age and the beating he took the last time out.
