Sean O’Malley was one of the hottest prospects in mixed martial arts this year. However, not a lot of his fans know that ‘Sugar’ also has one professional boxing fight to his name. Moreover, to his credit, O’Malley achieved the win while he was recovering from an ankle injury.
Sean O’Malley’s last fight ended in the first round. He suffered his first professional defeat at the hands of Marlon Vera. During the fight, it appeared he may have had some trouble with his ankle. Following the defeat, he had to be taken away from the octagon on a stretcher. The injury raised several eyebrows towards O’Malley.

However, for anyone who would’ve considered him weak or soft needs to listen to the story of how he ended up in his first boxing contest. Back in 2016, O’Malley popped his ankle while sparring at The MMA Lab. At that point, he was 4-0 in his professional mixed martial arts career. However, with the injury, he couldn’t train much of MMA.
Talking on his own YouTube channel, the UFC bantamweight, rather than sitting idle, trained in boxing. He went to a local boxing gym named Hammer Boxing. To prevent any further injury, he wrapped his foot heavily and put on boxing shoes. It only took O’Malley only two months to land himself a boxing fight.

Sean O’Malley doesn’t mind stepping into the boxing ring again someday
O’Malley recalled that training for a boxing fight differed significantly from training MMA. However, the experience helped him in understanding striking in a better way.

As far as his performance is concerned, he knocked his opponent down several times. Eventually, he ended up winning the fight via a KO. Four years down the line, O’Malley looks back on that experience as an enriching one. Therefore, he isn’t averse to the prospect of stepping into the squared circle once again. However, he knows that it will be highly unlikely given his UFC contract.
As of now, O’Malley will focus on making a comeback from his last fight. The setback has led to several questions on a career that was otherwise progressing smoothly. The 135-pounder will hope to return to his winning ways in his next visit to the octagon.
