Originally, Tony Ferguson was slated to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov in one of the most anticipated matches of the year. However, the match fell through when Khabib pulled out due to the imposition of travel restrictions by Russia.
As a result, Justin Gaethje—#4 ranked lightweight—was brought in as a replacement. The company promoted UFC 249 with Justin vs Tony as the headliner for the interim lightweight championship. Just when things finally came together, the Governor of California approached top Disney and ESPN officials.
