With Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier becoming official, Michael Chandler has now turned his attention to Tony Ferguson. Still waiting for his UFC debut, Chandler took to social media to call out the former interim champion for a fight.

A former Bellator lightweight champion, Chandler signed with the UFC a few months back. The UFC assigned him the task of serving as the backup for Khabib vs Gaethje at UFC 254. Chandler prepared for the fight and even made weight. However, he could not get the opportunity to step foot inside the Octagon. Regardless, the UFC is leaving no chance at building up Chandler’s brand.

Chandler initially called out McGregor after Dustin Poirier was taking his time to sign the contract. However, after the fight became official, he turned his attention to Ferguson.

With the retirement of Khabib Nurmagomedov, the lightweight division is left wide open. A number of contenders are the frontrunners to get the title shot. If Chandler can get a win over a top-five ranked opponent, he can strengthen his claim for a shot at the title. Plus, there can be no better way of getting closer to the title shot than a win over ‘El Cucuy’.

Michael Chandler has been eyeing a fight with Tony Ferguson for quite some time now

Even before serving as the backup at UFC 254, Chandler had been eyeing a fight with Tony Ferguson. ‘Iron’ acknowledged Chandler as one of the scariest fighters in the lightweight division. He added that Ferguson fights as if he has a screw loose in his head.

In an interview with ESPN last month, Ferguson said that he is currently training and hopes to get back to the Octagon before the end of the year. He knows that a fight with Chandler may be what the UFC is planning for him currently. He isn’t opposed to the idea of fighting the former Bellator champ. However, he wants to renegotiate his contract with the UFC before that.

Ferguson suffered his first lightweight loss since 2012 when he lost to Justin Gaethje at UFC 249. He believes that he was a “company man” back then for taking a fight that didn’t have a huge upside. The loss led to him losing his title shot. He now aims to regain the same by stringing together a couple of wins in the division.
