MMA at large is a collection of misfits who sport eccentric personalities. For what else can drive someone to step into a cage and fight another one to death. And Jorge Masvidal wants organizations like the UFC to hold their fighters accountable for their actions.

Fighters’ personal stories usually range from out of control behavior to street fights. However, few fighters inevitably take it a step too far. Some often go to a point that their behavior off the canvas starts affecting them on the canvas.

Jon Jones is the poster boy for bad decisions in the UFC. The UFC light heavyweight champion’s out-of-cage actions have been consistently plaguing him in the public domain.

The BMF champion, Jorge Masvidal opened up about his thoughts on Jones’ recent transgressions on The Dan Le Batard Show. And the perspective that he puts forth is something that should prevail across all institutions, sporting or otherwise.

Fighters who compete at the global stage influence the actions of the up and coming generation heavily. Therefore, leaving a positive impact on their malleable minds is the responsibility of fighters who are hoisted up on a pedestal.

“I remember back when I was young and we could be very influenced. I don’t want kids thinking that it’s cool for them to go out and drink and drive. You can hurt yourself very bad, but you could actually do something worse and take a whole family. You could do travesties if you’re drunk behind the wheel,” said Jorge Masvidal.

Jorge Masvidal demands accountability

Masvidal suggested a series of punishments that could be meted out to fighters if they engage in a particular violation. Compulsory community service is the ideal punishment according to Gamebred.

“So, in those regards, there should be things handed (down). If you were caught drinking and driving, you’re gonna have to give type of service back to the community. Let these young minds know that, ‘Hey, this is not cool. This was a mistake that I did, but under no circumstances should you do this and think you can get away with it,’” says Masvidal.

However, when it comes to suspensions, Masvidal was a little double-minded. He feels that fighting is all they have known, it is all they can do. Taking their passion and only source of income away seems a little too harsh, even if it is for a temporary basis.

Perhaps he was trying to protect himself from criticism considering it was a half-empty bottle of ‘El Recuerdo mezcal’ that was found in Jon Jones’ car. A brand that Masvidal has been promoting.

Gamebred has been out of action since his win against Nate Diaz at UFC 244 back in November 2019. The UFC was looking to set up a welterweight title fight and Masvidal’s name was thrown in the mix to take on Kamaru Usman.

However, the UFC has since moved away from that matchup. It will be interesting so see Street Jesus take on the Nigerian Nightmare with the welterweight title hanging in balance.
