Conor McGregor sports a rather eccentric and avant-garde personality that certainly takes some getting used to. It is no wonder that the Irishman is the UFC’s biggest breadwinner. However, Justin Gaethje believes that over time McGregor has lost the respect and sway he has in the lightweight division.

McGregor has been flooding social media platforms, with messages and posts aiming at his fellow fighters, undoubtedly in search of his next fight. However, he has not been getting the same response that he is otherwise accustomed to.

McGregor was gunning for a fight against the freshly minted interim UFC lightweight champion. The Dubliner guaranteed that he will be Gaethje’s next fight in a series of Tweets online.

However, Justin Gaethje has bigger fish to fry and says, “You don’t get to fight me next. Unless there’s a crazy circumstance where Khabib cannot fight. Then we’ll fight. That’s the only way. But other than that you don’t get a say,”

That spot sets Gaethje up against the undefeated UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Whom, coincidentally, McGregor is looking to fight once again, following his loss back in 2018.

“Do I think he should fight? Absolutely. There’s so many jokes you could make about his next fight. One of the main requirements is, you have to be coming out of at least two losses. So who’s at the top that fits that bill? Nobody. James Vick’s looking for a fight, I’m sure,” jokes Justin Gaethje.

Gaethje adds that the only way he will fight Conor ahead of the Dagestani fighter is if the latter is rendered unfit to compete due to some reason, medical or otherwise.

Justin Gaethje in a position of power

Gaethje adds that he’s in an extremely comfortable position as things stand currently. And the view from that position seems mighty convenient. He has the power to choose between Khabib and Conor, for his next matchup.

Gaethje goes on to dismiss the southpaw’s claims saying that he holds none of the cards. All he can do is hope for a high profile fight sometime in the near future.

The fact that the 31-year-old earned the interim title makes the achievement sweeter. However, with the former two-division champion calling him out scratches a different kind of itch for The Highlight.

“Even two months ago, who would’ve thought. Conor wasn’t begging but he’s coming out pretty thirsty for some attention and to fight me. There’s some 550 odd people on the roster, and 550 of them would trade spots with me right now,” said Gaethje.

The American took to social media to share a compilation of clips of him calling McGregor out, throughout the year. But McGregor chose to take on Donald Cerrone instead, in a fight that many claim was the easier one.

Gaethje, as things stand right now, is soaring high. But it would benefit The Highlight to not lose sight of what’s really important amid all this noise.

Do you think Gaethje can get to the top of the food chain in the lightweight division?
