After losing his UFC heavyweight championship to Stipe Miocic, Daniel Cormier hoped to recapture the title this year. However, due to the recent Coronavirus outbreak, things are looking bleak for the former champion.

Daniel Cormier defended his light heavyweight belt against Volkan Oezdemir and moved up to heavyweight to challenge Stipe Miocic for the title. Miocic, who had 3 title defences on his record, was expected to win the match. However, in a shocking turn of events, Cormier knocked out Miocic in the first round. DC’s victory over Miocic earned him the “champ-champ” status.

Almost a year later, Miocic challenged Cormier in a rematch in August 2019. Although Cormier dominated Miocic for 3 rounds, Miocic made an adjustment in the fourth round and finished Cormier with strikes. Since then, Cormier has been demanding a trilogy fight.

However, Stipe suffered an eye injury in his second fight against Cormier. He took some time off to heal it. The duo was expected to collide this year but it seems like the Coronavirus will not let that happen due to the ban on public gatherings.

Javier Mendez is fine with Daniel Cormier retiring

Daniel Cormier trains at the AKA gym where he is coached by Javier Mendez. On the Submission Radio Podcast, Mendez gave an update on Daniel Cormier’s current stand.

Mendez said, “It is a possibility that you may never see Daniel Cormier fight again because he doesn’t need to fight.”

“It’s 100% possible. He does not need to prove anything to me or himself. It’s a matter of what he wants.”

Mendez revealed that he is more interested in the Stipe fight than anything. He also said that if things go right then the UFC president, Dana White will probably want Cormier to hang around for a while. And probably fight Jon Jones at heavyweight. However, Mendez has no problem with Cormier retiring.

Cormier had an illustrious career. From an Olympian to one of the best athletes in MMA, he has done it all. There is absolutely no reason for him to fight Miocic as he already holds a victory over him. Financially speaking, Cormier has earned quite a bit and he even runs a wrestling academy. He also has a job as a commentator. Legacy wise, he is a guaranteed future Hall of Famer.

Do you feel Daniel Cormier needs to fight Stipe Miocic or Jones for the third time?
