Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Zhang Weili was stuck in the United States. However, recent updates suggest that the Strawweight Queen might be on her way back home.

Zhang Weili is the first Chinese UFC champion. She defeated Jessica Andrade to capture UFC gold last year. For her first defense, Weili took on Joanna Jedrzejczyk in March. Although she won that match, the build-up to the fight was stressful for the champion, as she had to relocate her training camp twice.

Zhang fled to Thailand when the outbreak got worse in China. But, to her surprise, Thailand also suffered from a similar fate. She then moved her camp to Abu Dhabi before arriving in Las Vegas. The level of impact on her training camp may be unknown, but the fight itself was an absolute delight.

Soon after her victory, she was supposed to return to China. But the UFC media obligations and USADA protocols did not allow her to do so. To add to her misery, the outbreak got serious in the States as well. Therefore, she stayed in Vegas to avoid contracting the virus at the airport or on the flight.

During her stay, Zhang felt homesick.

“I especially want to go back, I miss home, but now there is no way. I am very worried about being infected on the plane. It is really depressing and uncomfortable,” Weili said in a live broadcast.

She rented a house in Vegas where she trained with her coach and spent her time watching television. Her fans also sent her Chinese food.

Weili has been in the United States since 21 February 2020. Her fight against Joanna took place on March 7. According to Ariel Helwani, she remained with her head coach Cai and translator Tommy.

In a follow-up tweet, Helwani stated that, upon arrival, Weili and her crew will have to quarantine themselves in a hotel room for 14 days before reuniting with their families.
