About 500 strikes, 20 takedown attempts in 5 rounds for Colby Covington. What do you think? How the fight has played out? Colby Covington brought the chaos to Robbie Lawler and dominated him for five straight rounds. The fight between Colby and Robbie is just an indication of how good Colby is. With all the trash talk he has done so far in UFC, he has backed up every bit of it inside the octagon and with a performance like tonight’s, it would be insane if Colby doesn’t get the next title shot.

On the main event of UFC on ESPN 5, the former welterweight interim champion Colby Covington fought Robbie Lawler and managed to secure his number 1 contender spot in the welterweight division.  In every fight of Robbie Lawler, Robbie likes to bring a storm with him in the first round. But Colby had different plans in his mind.

Colby started the fight by taking Robbie down multiple times in the first round, secured the position, kept the pressure on Robbie to wear him down and then mixed it up with a high level of boxing. And he kept doing that for the next four rounds. It was almost shocking how easy it was for Colby to take Robbie down, and hold him there. Colby maintained a relentless pace throughout the match with floods of offenses and shut Robbie down. Robbie waited for the perfect opportunity to knock Colby out and land the mighty left hand but in the end, Colby’s pressure was too much for Robbie.

But with a win for Covington, now we have the challenger for Kamaru Usman’s title. UFC president Dana White has said it before that Colby is next in the title shot and after tonight that seems the only sensible thing to do since Colby and Kamaru already have a story between them. Meanwhile, Robbie Lawler after two straight loss aims to go back to the drawing board and improve his game as he mentioned in his post-fight interview.

Post-fight Colby and Usman were involved in a heated exchange when Colby joined the ESPN panel for an interview.  It was an interesting exchange between these two considering these two will be fighting each other soon. Colby seemed all fired up and claimed that Usman was faking his injuries and avoiding to fight Colby as he has done in the past. Stylistically a fight between Colby and Usman will be fascinating since both of these fighters are like each other. Both are phenomenal wrestlers,  have good striking skills and scary cardio. Colby has said that he wants to fight Usman in Nov in MSG, but we will have to wait as UFC president Dana White makes this fight official.
