UFC President Dana White had announced at a post-fight press conference that up to 60 fighters could be released from the promotion this month. Ever since then, the story has been akin to another day, another fighter release for the UFC.
This time it is veteran lightweight Matt Wiman who has ended up on the UFC chopping block. ‘Handsom’ Wiman is coming off a devastating KO following a slam from Jordan Leavitt less than a week ago.
Wiman first made his debut in the UFC back in 2006 at UFC 60 – Hughes vs. Gracie. Although his debut started with a loss, Wiman would go on for an impressive 10-5 record over 15 fights. Some of his most notable wins have been against Mac Danzig, Cole Miller, Thiago Tavares, Justin Buchholz, and Isaac Vallie-Flagg.

‘Handsome’ Matt Wiman released by the UFC
The Oklahoma native went on a five-year hiatus with his last fight being a win over Isaac Vallie-Flagg in 2014. In June 2019, Wiman returned to face Luis Pena. At UFC Fight Night 154 – Moicano vs. The Korean Zombie, Pena secured a third-round TKO victory. ‘Handsom’ Matt Wiman would then lose a decision to Joe Solecki to close out the year.
Almost one year later, Wiman returned on the recent UFC on ESPN 19 – Hermansson vs. Vettori card. He faced Jordan Leavitt who earned his UFC contract on the Dana White’s Contender Series. Leavitt, unbeaten in his career, recorded his eighth straight win in a row with a powerful slam just 22 seconds into the fight.
