Another one bites the dust as Jacare Souza became the third middleweight to went up a weight class and failed to secure a win. Souza took on Jan Blachowicz who put an end to Luke Rockhold’s fighting career with a brutal knockout. Though the outcome of this fight was not similar, Blachowicz did enough to win on the judges’ scorecards by a split decision.

This fight was very competitive yet pretty uneventful. Souza clearly had a gameplan to out grapple Balchowicz and control the fight as much as he can. He was successful at doing so for the first three rounds. However, Jan Blachowiz made a come back in the championship rounds, winning both the 4th and 5th rounds.

Both fighters were trading a few heavy leg-kicks throughout the fight. Jacare Souza was using his jabs very effectively, but he was not able to land any combinations following the jabs. On the other hand, Blachowicz showed phenomenal takedown defense as he denied Souza securing even a single takedown for the five rounds.

Blachowicz broke his left feet which might have been detrimental to his performance, but he showed the heart of a champion by persevering and putting the pressure on Souza in the final rounds.

Though it was a close fight, Souza did look like a legit light heavyweight. He looked too small against Blachowicz, there was an obvious power difference between them as Souza could not take Blachowicz down even after trying for most of the part of the first three rounds. However, compared to the outcomes of Chris Weidman and Luke Rockhold’s light heavyweight move, Jacare Souza’s performance was pretty impressive.

Souza was disappointed with the results as he has suffered quite a few split-decision losses in his UFC career.
On the other hand, Jan Blachowicz called out Jon Jones for a title fight before the Polish fighter decides to retire. Though Jan Blachowicz was not himself impressed with tonight’s performance, a win is a win at the end of the day.
