The Russian started the match on the front foot and dominated the 2009 champion. He did so with some exhilarating groundstrokes and kept Nadal uncomfortable.
Medvedev went 2-0 up and looked to be cruising to an easy win. However, the Spaniard did what he does best and came roaring back into the match. He overpowered Medvedev in the next three sets and, after battling for over five hours, finally was able to get the historic 21st grand slam win.

At one point in the fifth set, Nadal was serving for the match and Medvedev broke his serve. This had the UFC commentator take to Twitter and react to it. In his tweet, he wrote, “Absolutely riveting Australian Open men’s final coming down to it right now on ESPN+ They’ve played 5 hours and 16 minutes. 5-5 in the 5th. My Nadal +160 ticket feels like it’s on the ropes.”

At one point, Nadal looked down and out, and it comes as no surprise the world reacted to the match the way they did. It will probably go down as one of the greatest comebacks in open-era history.
With the win, he created history and became the first man to win 21 singles grand slam titles. Before the win, he was tied on 20 with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
