UFC middleweight contender Marvin Vettori spoke to Brett Okamoto following UFC Fight Night: Whittaker vs Gastelum at the Apex Facility. ‘The Italian Dream’ was in attendance for the main event bout and witnessed Robert Whittaker win a dominant decision win. ‘The Reaper’ executed some high-level striking on his way towards a 50-45 on the judges’ scorecards.

Chiefly, Marvin Vettori was in attendance in an attempt to claim the spot as the next title challenger. Vettori is on a five-fight win streak and is coming off two straight victories over ranked contenders. He believes he’s done enough to leapfrog everyone in the division and rematch Israel Adesanya, the sitting champion.

Marvin Vettori stakes his claim towards undisputed gold

The Italian Dream’ is optimistic that he’s done enough to warrant a title shot over the former champion Robert Whittaker. However, ‘Bobby Knuckles’ has certainly made his own lane as a contender with three top-tier wins. He’s beaten Darren Till, Jared Cannonier, and most recently Kelvin Gastelum, however, Vettori still stands by his resume.

“I have a good feeling man, I don’t know. It depends also on when he wants to fight again and I think if he wants to fight in June like he said before, I’m the only guy and I’m ready. This is a fight that needs to happen and this guy doesn’t even say my name. He keeps throwing hints like like pizza and stuff and he doesn’t even say my name, there’s a reason for that.”

“When we fought the first time, he felt something different than the other guys. A lot of people were believing the hype and giving him a lot of respect. I just went up and did my job…This fight needs to happen again.”

Ultimately, it would seem as though the race towards title contention will be fought between Vettori and Whittaker. Israel Adesanya has faced both men and managed to come out victorious on both occasions. However, his fight against Vettori was a split decision win thus bolstering Vettori’s claim that he’s come the closest to beating the champion.
