In 2017, Jon Jones regained the UFC Lightheavyweight Championship with an impressive win over Daniel Cormier at the UFC 214 in Anaheim, California.

Jones was coming into the fight after serving a ban. He had previously held the Lightheavyweight Championship for a period of four years which included a win over Cormier. UFC 214 was all about the rivalry between Jones and Cormier.

It was the second time that the duo were meeting in the bout. In 2015, Jones had successfully defended his title at the UFC 185. He was later stripped off it due to an incident off the bout. Cormier replaced him and it was Jones once again who would win the Championship battle in 2017.

With a thunderous head kick in the third round, Jones knocked out Cormier.

“I thought the fight was going well, I don’t even know what happened,” Cormier said after the fight. “They said I got kicked in the head. Man, that was so disappointing. I guess if you win both fights, there is no rivalry.”

Daniel Cormier an inspiration for Jon Jones

The two fights between Jones and Cormier were highly competitive in nature. Although Jones emerged victorious on both occasions, he has nothing but respect for his fellow fighter. Recently, Jones said that he looked at Cormier as an inspiration.

“You know I look at Daniel Cormier as an inspiration,” he said. “For him to be a champion at 40 years old, dominating guys much younger than him. He lets me know that if I do the right things, there’s no reason why we can’t keep up with this next generation of fighters. That’s the goal, that’s the motivation. Thank you for the motivation, Daniel Cormier”
