Unseeded Danielle Collins Rallies Past Garbine Muguruza in a Late Night French Open 2020 Thriller

The third round of Roland Garros witnessed a massive upset as the American, Danielle Collins, dispatched the two-time Grand Slam champion, Garbine Muguruza, in three sets from French Open 2020. Former Australian Open semifinalist, Collins was trailing by two breaks in the third set (3-0) but with her fearless fight spirit and confidence, she flipped the encounter upside down by defeating the Spanish ace 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.

In the opening set, Muguruza was leading 2-0. She had a chance to take a 3-0 lead, but after missing an overhead smash, Collins held at 2-1. By playing top-notch tennis on big moments, Collins ascended to pull off the opening set away from the Spaniard ace 7-5.

Former World Number one Garbine Muguruza was not giving up, and she continued to hit clean winners. In fact, the match was becoming challenging for Collins. Tackling the late-night conditions in Paris with her astute defensive skills, Muguruza grabbed the second set 6-2.

Danielle Collins Amazingly Battled Past Garbine Muguruza

The dominance from 11th seed Muguruza was visible in the deciding set. With her unfazed tennis, Garbine held a double break 3-0 lead. Despite the trail, Collins rallied past to defeat Muguruza 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.

Before 2020, 26-year-old Danielle Collins had only won a single Roland Garros match in the year 2019. Now, she is through to the fourth round and will lock horns against 30th seed Ons Jabeur from Tunisia. If she wins, it’ll be her first-ever quarterfinal spot at the Paris Major.
