The battle to end the year at the top spot, will commence today at the US open. Karolina Pliskova holds a slender 5 point lead at the top over the Romanian, Simona Halep, who will face off against Russian player Maria Sharapova, who received a wild card into the final slam of the year.

Pliskova was a finalist here, the last year, but is defending just 1300 points, which leaves the window wide open for potentially eight players to exploit this situation. Pliskova will have to reach the finals of the tournament to ensure that her lead stays intact. Halep is the closest, having a chance to become the first ever Romanian woman to hold the number one spot. Garbine Muguruza, who has never made it past the second round of the US open, will look to close in the gap, after a successful mid-year. Elena Svitolina will have to reach at-least the semi-finals of the US open to have a shot at the world number one. Caroline Wozniacki-a former world number one, the British world number one Johanna Konta, the Russian veteran Kuznetsova and the American Venus Williams, all of them are in contention for the world number one, but will have to win the title in order to do so.

It’s clear that there is much more at stake at the US open this year, when it comes to the women’s division, with eight women battling to reign supreme at the end of the year. Meanwhile the battle for the top spot in the women’s doubles is also up for grabs , as Lucie Safarova, looks to defend her lead at the top spot against the likes of Ekaterina Makarova, Elena Vesnina, and Martina Hingis. Safarova will be partnering with Barbora Strycova, while Hingis will pair up with Chan Yung-jan. As the year draws to a close, the US open will play a major part, in electing the player at the top spot at the end of the year.
