US Open: Women’s Road to Semifinals

After almost  a fortnight of an action-packed and heated summer in the meadows, the US Open Tournament has narrowed down to just four women semifinalists. Here we have a look on our semifinalists and their Road to Semifinals:

Peng Shuai

The world no. 1 in doubles has been playing quite consistently in the flushing meadows of the United States. After an early defeat in Australian Open, the player has been advancing steadily in the tournament, winning every match with straight sets. Her first victim was J Zhenq who was defeated by 6-3, 6-3. In the 2nd round she triumphed over four seeded A Radwanska, with straight sets of 6-3, 6-4. For the 3rd and 4th round it was pretty much the same when she beat the Italian R. Vinci and the Czech L. Safarova respectively. In the quarters , she crushed Switzerland’s B Bencic in sets of 6-2, 6-1 and because of this she will be making her 1st grand slam semifinalthis year.

Caroline Wozniacki

Starting this year with a shoulder injury, she was ranked 10th at the start of the tournament but now she has conquered each and every one of her opponents. She faced Slovakian M. Ryabrikova in the first round, who retired out during the 3rd set forfeiting the match, thus the match ending at 6-3, 3-6, 2-0. In the 2nd round she defeated Belarus’s A. Sasnovich 6-3, 6-2. Playing against 18th seed A. Petkovic, she won with straight sets 6-3,6-4. In the 4th round she vanquished the former US Open champion Maria Sharapova 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. In the quarters she routed the thirteen seeded S. Irrani I straight sets of 6-0, 6-1. She will be facing Peng Shuai in the semifinals.

Serena Williams 

The defending champion has once again displayed her bad ass image on court as she has been massacring each and everyone of her opponents. For the first 3 rounds all her opponents were from the States. In the first round, she beat T. Townsend 6-3,6-1. As for the 2nd round , it was V. King with a score of 6-1, 6-0 and again in the 3rd round, she defeated V. Lepchenkowith sets of 6-3,6-3. In the 4th round, she beat the Estonian K. Kanepiscoring 6-3,6-3. In the quarters finals, she crushed the 11th seed Italian F. Penetta (6-3,6-2).

Ekaterina Makarova

The 17th seeded Russian has entered her first major semi finals. For the first round she defeated USA’s G Min with scores of 6-4,6-2. For the 2nd round she vanquished Slovenia’s P. Hercoq with sets of 6-1,6-2. For the 3rd she white-washed Kazakhstan’s Z. Diyaswith the figures of 6-2,6-4. Yet again for the 4th she beat 7th seed Canadian E Bouchard in a nail biting match of 7-6, 6-4. Finally in the quarters she trounced over the 14th seed, Belasrus’s V Azarenka in sets of 6-4, 6-2.
