After the USMNT’s exit from the 2026 World Cup, following a devastating 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16, they are now gearing up for the 2030 World Cup. The first task on the to-do list for the next World Cup has been retaining their head coach, Mauricio Pochettino.

Argentine head coach Mauricio Pochettino has been at the helm of the USMNT for nearly two years now. To hold this partnership for long, US Soccer offered Pochettino a contract extension to stay through the 2030 World Cup. After receiving no answer from him, finally, some hope has been ignited by Pochettino.

“We are evaluating it, looking at it. They [U.S. Soccer] have made me an offer to continue, and we will see. Next week we will make a decision,” Pochettino said during an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena Cope on July 16, as quoted by USMNT Only on X.

After their exit from their home turf, the USA needs stability, and Pochettino is perfect for that. They want to lock him up for the next 4 years. He is an elite coach with a CV as a manager of Tottenham, PSG, and Chelsea.

Pochettino made his debut, leading the U.S. to a 2-0 friendly win over Panama. Since then, they won a fourth-place finish in the CONCACAF Nations League and even runners-up in the Gold Cup. If he agrees, it will end their long and stressful search for a new head coach. Their overall campaign was a success, thanks to Pochettino, who managed the team.

“One of our youth national team stars, we want to make sure that he’s focused on the U.S. men’s national team and not one of the other countries where he could play,” said U.S. Soccer CEO JT Batson to Jeff Carlisle. “Mauricio and Jesus spent a lot of time with him this morning. They’re working with us on the design of the athletes’ village at the national training center from their experience at Tottenham, Chelsea, or PSG.”

If Pochettino declines the offer, he has many waiting for his response. He can return to the European clubs that are rumored to be targeting him if he leaves. While AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Newcastle were on the hunt. Real Madrid closed the deal by hiring José Mourinho.

Newcastle United in the English Premier League has also opened its doors. Tottenham Spurs are also waiting for a comeback from Pochettino to his old club. US Soccer has contingency plans if Pochettino declines; they reportedly have 11 replacements waiting in the substitution area.
