USA had a sad goodbye to their FIFA campaign, but for the USMNT goalkeeper, Matt Freese, the backlash that followed their exit has been more painful. To salt his wound, an American soccer journalist has left a rather snarky statement for the keeper. For Lawrence Dockery, Freese’s interview was not enough for the blunder he made.

“I felt hurt by watching you come 15 yards out of the penalty area for no reason and gifting Belgium a goal,” Lawrence Dockery wrote on X.

The critical mistake by Matt Freese in the 57th minute of the USMNT’s 4-1 loss to Belgium. At that point, the US was 2-1 down and was eagerly trying for an equaliser. Seeing a long, over-the-top ball bypass his defense, Freese opted to act as a sweeper-keeper.

He sprinted 15 yards to clear the ball, but luck was not on his side. His leg got stuck in the grass, and he lost control of the ball. That’s when the game got out of their hands. Hans Vanaken, the Belgian midfielder, had a perfect loose ball and an empty net, and he did not miss this chance. In the aftermath that followed, Freese took all the responsibility.

“Obviously disappointed for my involvement and error in judgment on the third goal,” he told reporters after the tough loss to Belgium in the round of 16. “It’s part of the position. I know the guys in front of me did everything they could today to get the win. So proud of them and wish that moment was different and wish the result was different.”

As he might have taken up the responsibility, but for the fans and Lawrence, a certified referee since 2006, Dockery’s analysis of the blunder carried tactical weight. Dockery is well known in American soccer media for demanding accountability, but this analyst came from a referee’s perspective.

Freese’s choice to abandon the US goalpost while defender Tim Ream was still recovering was a rookie move. Dockery, before the World Cup started, had explicitly voiced concerns about the defensive line of the USMNT. He also criticised Freese as an “unproven goalkeeper” on the world’s biggest stage on his show Beyond the 90.

Freese defended the team’s passion and hard work by stating that people don’t understand how badly they wanted to win. For Dockery, his comment was all about taking accountability on the field. They did reach the round of 16, but the co-host nation expected much more from itself on its home ground. Now they will work on their weakness.
