The European Athletics Championship takes place every four years. It was last held in 2022 and the upcoming season is to be held in. However, even with two years still left for it to commence, issues have already started cropping up. This championship was decided to take place in Birmingham city, but its financial condition now is making it seem otherwise. This event is at risk of getting moved from Birmingham due to the shortfall of funding.

The city is falling short of £2.2m, and they were provided with £13.7m for this event in March 2023. However, they have still been asking for more to cover the funding issue. The council declared itself bankrupt in September 2023. If approved by the authorities £3 kept for the Grassroots Sports Programme will be given to championships, however, decisions are still to be made and the issue will be raised by the WMCA board on the 12th of January 2024.
