At the age of 30, an age when most athletes are on the verge of retirement, Michael Phelps was preparing for the Rio Olympics in 2016.

Michael Phelps is one of the greatest of all time in swimming as well as the entire sporting world. He has won a total of 28 medals in the Olympics Games. Out of those, 23 are gold, 3 are silver and 2 are bronze. In an interview with Yahoo’s Pat Forde, Phelps shared what he felt about his performance and his future goals.

Speaking of his prime, Phelps said, “It excited me to see times like that again. At meets, I can still step up and swim some of the best times I’ve ever swam, at age 30.”

Adding to this, Phelps said that he feels he hasn’t given his best performance yet. Implying that there was still room for improvement, Michael revealed, “I don’t think I’ve had an Olympics at 100 percent.”

On that note, Phelps was asked what he felt about his performance in the Beijing Olympics. In 2008, Michael Phelps set the Olympic record for individual gold medals by winning eight gold medals. Phelps replied to the question by mentioning that a few months prior to the competition, he had a broken wrist. He said, “I broke my wrist six months before.”

With that being said, Phelps proved that even at 30 he was far from being done with the pool.

Phelps proceeded to dominate the pool in 2016

Phelps won his first gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the 4×100 freestyle relay. He won another two golds in the 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley, respectively. Teaming up with Conor Dwyer, Ryan Lochte, and Townley Haas, Phelps won another gold medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Unfortunately, for his final individual event at the Olympics, he did not secure first place, unlike the other times. Singaporean Joseph Schooling eclipsed him in the 100m butterfly race and Phelps ended up with a silver medal.

However, for the final show of his career, Phelps would settle for nothing but gold. And that is exactly what he did. Phelps along with Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller, and Nathan Adrian won the gold in the 4x100m medley race. Not only that, but they also broke the Olympic record for the event with a record time of 3:27.95.
