Swimming World Beware: Five Florida Beaches to Avoid and Save Yourself From Deadly Shark Attacks

Beaches apart from their scientific and natural significance, are places of leisure. When summer hits, it gives people an opportunity to relax, enjoy and socialize. Swimmers, surfers, and divers visit the beaches for exercise and adventure. On the same note, Florida is famous for its beaches, and for its stretching thousand-mile coastline. Its geographical location between the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico also adds to its advantage.

However, the beaches of Florida are also prone to shark attacks. The presence of deadly oceanic predators is quite often in the Sunshine State. Recently, a twelve-year-old girl was attacked by a shark but thankfully she survived. In light of this event and events before a famous digital publication dedicated to travel compiled a list of the US’s most deadliest and dangerous beaches.

There are many beaches in the US. But among them Florida beaches list among the deadliest. According to the Travel Lens report based on the parameters of surfing zone casualties, shark attacks, and hurricanes, they have rated the beaches. The surfing zone casualties and shark attacks are calculated from 2010. But, hurricanes are calculated from the year 1851 till 2020.

The first on the list is New Smyrna Beach. Its score is 8.14. Its beach stretches 17 miles. It has in total 32 shark attacks, the highest in the list. Second comes Cocoa Beach. Its score is 7.57. It has a total of seven shark attacks and surf zone casualties. Third on the list is Ormond Beach. Its score is 7.48. It has in total eight surf zone casualties and shark attacks on four occasions.

In fourth place comes  Panama City Beach, with a score of 7.16. It has in total twenty-four surf zone casualties and two shark attacks. All the above four beaches had the same number of hurricanes i.e. 120. In fifth place stands Myrtle Beach of South Carolina in terms of list. According to Florida beaches Melbourne Beach comes on sixth. Its score is 6.35. It has six surf zone casualties and six shark attacks.

Recent deadly shark attacks on the beaches

In the wake of the report let’s have a look at a few recent shark attacks. Smyrna Beach which comes under Volusia County, has the highest number of shark attacks in the world. On March 9th, 2022 a 21-year-old boy got attacked by a shark. It has bitten his right foot. Following this, a 12-year-old gymnast got bitten on cocoa beach. In Florida last month in the space of thirty-six hours, two shark bite incidents occurred.

Florida is considered to be the shark bite capital of the world. In the light of recent attacks that happened in Egypt and with the publishing of the Travel Lens report, it is wise for swimmers in the area to be cautious. Safety is one’s prime responsibility.
