81-Year-Old Bodybuilder Who Survived a “Triple Heart Bypass” Still Works Out and Eats Six Meals a Day Containing 3000 Calories

Ted Clifton, a great-grandad of two still trains and competes as a bodybuilder. Sadly, he suffered from a triple heart bypass which, however, didn’t discourage him from working out. The Incredible bodybuilder opened up about his diet routine of six meals a day. Moreover, Clifton is accompanied by another octogenarian in his bodybuilding career. 

The 81-year-old set up his own gym in the abandoned oil rigs in the 1960s. Additionally, Ted shared insights from his iron-pumping feats during his youth. Let’s find out more about the inspirational journey of his métier.

As per an article in Chronicle Live, Ted Clifton, an 81-year-old bodybuilder hailing from Newcastle, still trains and competes for bodybuilding events. The father of three reportedly set up his self-made gym in the North Sea oil rigs where he previously worked as an electrician in the 1960s. “The gym has been open since 1978. I worked as an electrician on the oil rigs for 15 years and I was the first person to build a gym on the rigs… I set up gyms on five rigs making all the machines and dumbbells myself”, he said.

“I had a triple heart bypass six years ago but I’m still training. I used to eat 12 raw eggs for breakfast with sherry”, disclosed Ted. Unfortunately, Clifton fell prey to a sudden triple heart bypass, which he credits to his diet in the 1960s. However, the octogenarian continued with his profession even after the health hazard. 

Furthermore, he restricts himself to six gluten-free meals now, which include white fish, turkey, rice, chicken and a couple of protein shakes. “I have between 2,500 and 3,000 calories a day, including four eggs”, he added.

Contrastingly, the dashing athlete revealed that his meals in the past majorly included cholesterol-loaded food which might have affected his heart condition. Ted said, “It was like Rocky, there wasn’t a concept of salmonella, loads of fatty food, really bad for you. In the 80s it all changed for the better. He also mentioned that he had been working out since the age of 16 and running his gym for 44 years afters its establishment.

The bodybuilder highlighted the fact that weightlifting works positively for older people and encourages more of them to do so. “We’ve got a lot of people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, as well as 70s. We have learnt now that exercise is good for older people”, Clifton stated. The great-grandad trains with his 84-year-old counterpart while setting a benchmark in the bodybuilding world.
