In a nutshell, bull riding is a very fast-paced sport. The cowboys and the crowd in the arena get a real adrenaline boost from the action, and everyone leaves feeling ready to take on whatever the rest of the rodeo night brings. It only takes an 8-second buzzer for the rider to be deemed the winner by the judges, but if there is nothing particularly noteworthy about the performance, the audience may not be as forgiving.

Austin Richardson, a cowboy from the United States, just won the Iron Cowboy 2023 competition in Brazil with an 8-second buzzer and a score of 90.75. Despite the judges’ positive view of the cowboy, viewers were understandably disappointed in the points when the video of the accomplishment was posted to Instagram.

Didn’t give the bull a chance

On June 16, 2023, PBR Brazil sponsored an event called Iron Cowboy 2023. With such a large audience in attendance and well-known cowboys from Brazil and elsewhere on the globe taking part, it’s safe to say the event was a smashing success. Among the cowboys competing with the bull, Magoado, was American cowboy Austin Richardson. As the cowboy rode atop the charging bull, the metal chutes opened, and the spectators went wild.

Magoado was not someone who would calmly let the cowboys ride on him, as shown by the fact that he continued to bump Richardson right up to the finish. The American cowboy clung to the bucking bull with all his might until the 8-second buzzer sounded. The cowboy rode the bull until the last seconds, proving that he isn’t the kind to let the animal throw him off. Later, though, the bull pushed him off, and Richardson fled from it while the rodeo officials tried to settle it down. The judges recognized the cowboy’s remarkable performance and awarded him a score of 90.75 for his outstanding ride.

PBR Brazil shared the footage of this impressive performance on their Instagram page. However, none anticipated the response from the crowd.

Conflicting emotions of the bull riding community

Despite the fact that an American cowboy won the competition in Brazil, many online commenters were unimpressed.

It looks like the community is really outraged, as this comment read, “Stop paying d*ck to gringos.” The ride didn’t feel like 90-point worthy as per the comments, as one comment read, “I believe the mount could be rated at 88 points max, for the bull’s performance, but I believe the comments from those in the US! They are knowledgeable!”

As per the bull riding community, in American PBR contests, the scenario would have been different, as one comment read, “In our USA it would be 86 max 86.50.” Another similar comment read, “Bull jumped for all that, if it wasn’t in the United States, it was a yellow flag.”

Fans’ divergent reactions are just that, but the event was clearly a tremendous success since so many people showed out to see the top bull riders in action.
