The US Team has begun its 2022 World Gymnastics Championships journey on a high note. The US women’s gymnastics team almost had a flawless execution on the opening day of the tournament.  The team is currently at top of the scoring sheet with a total of 167.263 points.

After the first two qualifying subdivisions, the American women gymnasts, also hold the top two spots in all individual categories, except bars. But in the absence of their top contenders – Simone Biles and Suni Lee, will the US Team claim the medals?

US Team indivudal perfomance at 2022 World Gynastics Championships

With both Biles and Lee out of the elite-level competition, the team’s hope turned towards 2020 Olympics’ floor champion Jade Carey and world championship debutant Shilese Jones.

According to the scoresheet by NBC, Jones was the star performer for her team. She, ended up at the top position in the women’s all-around category while claiming the second spot in uneven bars and balance beam.

Similar to Jones, veteran gymnast Jade Carey is currently leading in the Vault category and is sitting in the second position in the women’s all-around and floor exercises.

 

17-year-old world debutant, Skye Blakely is at the top of the balance beam scoresheet. But unfortunately, Blakely missed her catch-and-release move during the uneven bars routine.

Tokyo Olympics team silver medalist Jordan Chiles failed to deliver a perfect performance on the balance beam, hence, scoring a low point. However, she redeemed herself and is leading in the floor exercise. She is also standing second on the Vault score sheet.

Overall, the individual performances of all the US Team gymnasts have helped them achieve the top team spot. The gymnasts have not let the absence of Biles and Lee, hinder their team’s performance at the World’s.

US Team’s top rivals at the Worlds

US Team is followed by Belgium (156.063 and Spain (149.162), in second and third place, respectively. Belgium’s 2020 Tokyo Olympics bar champion Nina Derwael, is at the top of the uneven bars category. Besides these two countries, China is also one of the top contenders for winning the team gold medal.

The 2022 World Gymnastics Championships is being held in M&SBank Arena in Liverpool, England. The tournament, which began on 29th October, will conclude on November 6th, 2022.
