The Breeders’ Cup is fast approaching, and horse racing fans from around the world are gearing up for a spectacular showdown. While casual fans of the sport mostly mark their calendars for the Kentucky Derby, the real ones know: It’s the Breeders’ Cup where the real action is at. This year, the premier year-end competition will head to Del Mar racing, and the thought of seeing Sovereignty back in his natural habitat is already making the fans giddy.

Winning both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes this year, the Godolphin LLC-owned horse has cemented its status as an elite horse racing powerhouse. With six wins and a second-place finish in his last seven starts, Sovereignty’s capability shouldn’t be debatable by now. The fans love him, too. While this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic has an incredible line-up, Sovereignty’s loyalists refuse to consider anyone else as the obvious winner for the November 1 race.

FuaDual Racing took to X on October 19 to check which way the fans are leaning toward for the Breeders’ Cup Classic showdown. “Who is more likely to win the @BreedersCup Classic at @DelMarRacing: Sovereignty or Fierceness?” the social media post opened the poll. Didn’t take long before the Bill Mott-trained colt’s fans arrived in throngs to share their vote of confidence for the 3-year-old.

And why wouldn’t they? At the Derby, Sovereignty edged out the race favorite, Journalism, to earn an emphatic victory at Churchill Downs. Mott opted to sit out on the Preakness Stakes, and his poster boy (horse) returned with virility to win the Belmont Stakes a month later, once again subduing the Curlin sire, this time by three lengths. In July, Sovereignty outran Baeza to claim victory at the Jim Dandy Stakes (Grade II). But Mott had more reasons to be happy about waiting for him.

Despite all his accolades, Mott had never won the “Midsummer Derby”, aka the Travers Stakes (Grade I). That was until he entered the Saratoga race with Sovereignty. In August, the Into Mischief sire rolled into the finishing line to secure a win at the Spa, bringing Bill Mott his Travers Stakes title and rolling into the history book in one go. Quite understandably, some fans are willing to give the Breeders’ Cup Classic title to Sovereignty already. But let’s be realistic, the task is easier said than done.

Fierceness, the other horse named in FanDual Racing’s post, is no ordinary one. Winner of the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, the 2024 Travers Stakes and the Jim Dandy Stakes, and the 2025 Pacific Classic Stakes (which he won by defeating the Preakness Stakes winner, Journalism), the 4-year-old colt is a force to be reckoned with. The September win even made Todd Pletcher’s horse No. 2 in the Breeders’ Cup power rankings. And yet, Sovereignty’s fans weren’t willing to consider Fierceness’ claims to win the Classic.

Sovereignty’s fans are eager to share their final verdict

Some fans are pretty confident that Mott’s powerhouse will not only surpass Fierceness but will be able to hold off against whatever the others throw at him, too. “Sovereignty will Destroy this field,” one fan seemed sure of the result for the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Well, you can’t shrug off the prediction, given that Sovereignty’s arch-nemesis will arrive at Del Mar without his regular accomplice. Just a few days ago, Journalism’s connections announced that the horse will have Jose Ortiz aboard for the Classic, instead of Umberto Rispoli. Naturally, some fans think the change might take away from Journalism’s abilities, and leave the race for the taking for Sovereignty.

The Classic will also have Bob Baffert returning for the Breeders’ Cup’s flagship race, this year with Nevada Beach. The trainer hasn’t had much success in 2025, and he would love nothing more than to secure a victory at Del Mar to end the season on a high note. While recent triumphs might make Baffert happy, Sovereignty’s fans aren’t too sure if that will be enough for the trainer to defeat the latter. “Sovereignty is way too good. Nothing in that field can match his finishing speed,” read another fan’s comment.

Sovereignty is the best horse in the world right now. Nobody is beating him,” one more fan knows who’s winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic, despite what others might claim. However, another fan reminds how Fierceness’s experience could play a crucial role. “Sovereignty is a beast but he’s only run against his own 3yo crop and Fierceness is really talented but you never know which fierceness shows up sometimes,” the fan still highlights how the older horse’s unpredictability makes Sovereignty look the better choice.
