Being a player on the active roster of the New York Yankees seems to be tough at the moment. Even more so if your name is Gerrit Cole.
The Yankees’ star pitcher endured a difficult time on the mound yesterday, as the team from the Bronx suffered a 6-2 loss to their fierce rivals, the Boston Red Sox in the American League wildcard game. Following the Yankees’ loss, fans took to social media to react to Cole’s game.

Fans take to Twitter to mock Gerrit Cole following Yankees’ loss to the Red Sox
In 2019, Cole signed a massive $324million deal which would keep him at the Yankees for nine years, which started from the 2020 MLB season. Many regarded him as an excellent pitcher prior to his arrival, which he displayed when he played for the Houston Astros.
Along with strong statistics, he is also a four-time All-Star, with his latest appearance in the All-Star game coming this year. While he recorded excellent statistics in the regular season, he couldn’t replicate those levels of performance against the Red Sox yesterday.
In the first inning, Red Sox short stop Xander Bogaerts smashed an 89mph pitch from Cole into the stands, giving them a 2-0 lead. Kyle Schwarber added to Cole’s misery in the bottom of the third inning, smashing a home run to send the Red Sox 3-0 up. This prompted Yankees manager Aaron Boone to pull Cole out of the game and replace him with Clay Holmes.
Cole’s performance prompted several reactions from fans on social media. While some mocked his early exit, others took to mentioning how his deal with the Yankees was far too expensive.

The Yankees achieved just nine strikeouts in the entire game
Along with the Yankees hitters, their pitchers also had a bad day in the office yesterday. They fielded five different pitchers, who could only manage nine strikeouts in the game. This total is just one more than that of Red Sox pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, who recorded eight in five innings.
