At a point in time this season, many didn’t expect the St. Louis Cardinals to make the MLB playoffs. However, they embarked on an unprecedented 17-game winning streak which secured them a spot in the National League wildcard game.

Billed as the underdogs against the Los Angeles Dodgers in yesterday’s game, the Cardinals put in an incredible effort. However, they came up short as the reigning World Series champions came good in the clutch to secure their spot in the National League Division Series.
While their season ended with yesterday’s loss, their star pitcher Adam Wainwright had an interesting outlook on the game.

Adam Wainwright looks on the bright side following St. Louis Cardinals loss
The Cardinals made a good start to the NL Wildcard game, taking a 1-0 lead through second baseman Tommy Edman. Although the Dodgers pulled them back through Justin Turner’s solo home run, the Cardinals kept the pressure up by preventing the reigning World Series champions from scoring.

While the Cardinals didn’t score in the top of the ninth inning, they scored two outs in the bottom of it. However, Chris Taylor smashed a two-run home run at the death to end the Cardinals’ phenomenal season.

Although they lost, Wainwright mentioned how the Cardinals made the reigning World Series champions nervous with their game, which he saw as a positive. He said, “We didn’t win. But we came in and made them nervous, didn’t we?”

Although the Dodgers won the game with a walk-off, even they may agree with Wainwright’s words.

Wainwright pitched five out of nine innings in yesterday’s game
The 40-year-old looked fairly impressive against the Dodgers in the wildcard game. Wainwright left the pitcher’s mound in the sixth inning, conceding just one run and scoring four strikeouts in the game.

While the Cardinals didn’t make a deep run in the playoffs, their 17-game undefeated streak will be one of their best moments this year. Hence, keeping the Cardinals away from the playoffs next season could be a huge challenge for the rest of the National League.
