Yesterday, the Yankees suffered a second successive loss to the AL East division champions, the Tampa Bay Rays. To make matters worse, the Boston Red Sox, their fiercest rivals defeated the Baltimore Orioles to tie the Yankees’ 91-70 record.

These events sent social media wild, with fans across the world reacting to the Rays dominating the Yankees in New York.

Twitter plays host to fans’ reactions following New York Yankees loss

Although the Yankees play their final three-game series at home, the Rays looked ruthless in the Bronx yesterday. They recorded 100 wins in a single MLB season for the first time in their history with a 12-2 drubbing of the Yankees.

While this put more pressure on the Yankees to win their last game, this loss did more than just that. It also allowed the Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners to stay in the hunt for a wildcard spot.

The Yankees could play the Red Sox in the wildcard game away from home

Following the Red Sox’s 5-3 win over the Nationals, they moved above the Yankees despite having the same win-loss record. Should they win tomorrow’s regular-season ending game against the Nationals, they will have a massive advantage.

Not only will they gain a wildcard spot, but they will get home advantage in the wildcard game. This means, should the Yankees also win against the rays, they could play the Red Sox in the wildcard game in Fenway Park.

The AL wildcard game will take place on Tuesday, October 5. However, there could be tiebreaker games to play if both these teams lose, and the Blue Jays and Mariners win their games.
