Just one game remains in this year’s MLB regular season. However, the race for a wildcard spot in the American League is well and truly on as the New York Yankees find themselves in a four-way battle.

Yesterday, the Yankees suffered a second successive loss to the AL East division champions, the Tampa Bay Rays. To make matters worse, the Boston Red Sox, their fiercest rivals defeated the Baltimore Orioles to tie the Yankees’ 91-70 record.

These events sent social media wild, with fans across the world reacting to the Rays dominating the Yankees in New York.

Twitter plays host to fans’ reactions following New York Yankees loss

Although the Yankees play their final three-game series at home, the Rays looked ruthless in the Bronx yesterday. They recorded 100 wins in a single MLB season for the first time in their history with a 12-2 drubbing of the Yankees.

While this put more pressure on the Yankees to win their last game, this loss did more than just that. It also allowed the Red Sox, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners to stay in the hunt for a wildcard spot.

Fans took to Twitter to express themselves following another disappointing result for the Yankees. Most of them spoke about the power hitting from Rays’ second baseman Brandon Lowe, who smashed a stunning three home runs.

Although the Red Sox played the Washington Nationals away from home yesterday, fans made their dislike for the Yankees clear. During the match, a chant of “Yankees suck!” broke out in the Nationals Park, where this game took place.

Following the Red Sox’s 5-3 win over the Nationals, they moved above the Yankees despite having the same win-loss record. Should they win tomorrow’s regular-season ending game against the Nationals, they will have a massive advantage.

Not only will they gain a wildcard spot, but they will get home advantage in the wildcard game. This means, should the Yankees also win against the rays, they could play the Red Sox in the wildcard game in Fenway Park.
