Both teams feature in the American League East. Although the Yankees looked in prime position to reach the wildcard slot, they lost home advantage to the Red Sox, who finished the season with the same 92-70 record as them. During the regular season, the Red Sox and the Yankees met 19 times, with the former winning 10 of them compared to the latter’s nine.
The Red Sox made a quick start in Fenway Park today, racing to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning itself. Xander Bogaerts smashed a pitch from Gerrit Cole straight into the stands to hand the Red Sox a two-run home run.
