In an interesting “Kung Fu Tuesdays” post, Bruce Lee’s official Instagram account shared a video of a six-pack abs Little Phoenix training in an outdoor space. The caption in the post revealed that the master used a simple one-pound cylindrical rod for power punching. Lee would hold a rod in each hand while standing. With the rod, he would punch up to his nose level several times.

“If you keep your body and arms relaxed, you will notice that your punches will automatically snap back at the end of your delivery,” explained the caption. The main idea behind practicing punches with the steel rod was “to develop snapping and whipping blows.”

Moreover, the exercise has a two-fold purpose, which is to enhance speed and power. Consistently practicing with the one-pound steel rod would effectively induce power in punches. Hence, when punching without the rod, the hand will automatically feel its heaviness resulting in strong punches. The caption explained, “The secret behind the exercise is to concentrate or pretend that your empty hands still contain the cylinders as you throw the punches.” Lee called this phenomenon “flowing energy,” a way to make the mind do wonders for body strength.

The caption also pointed out that using the force of shoulders while punching is a bad habit that decreased speed. Hence, Lee performed a unique exercise. He used a staff across his shoulders with his hands far apart while twisting his body from one side to the other. It helped in improving shoulder alignment.

He indicated that practitioners need to train every part of their body if they wish to fight with complete force. He then showed a punching move during the interview. He leaned forward while sitting and executed a punch that channelized power from his hips to his arms. Lee expressed, “get all your energy in there. And make this into a weapon.” Even in the interview, Lee did not care about anything except for displaying a super fast punch. That’s how dedicated the master was.
