Jackie Chan, a great actor with a rich martial arts background, is known for doing things his own way. This encompasses not just his acting chops but also his stunts and his sense of style. Yet as Chan disclosed, his eccentric fashion style, which was also one of his peculiar habits, set him apart from other men.
In his 2015 autobiography titled ‘Never Grow Up,’ Jackie Chan discusses this strange habit. Chan made no secret of his fondness for dressing in traditionally female Chinese garments. He continued to elaborate on why these particular clothes were so special to him.

Jackie Chan, who is originally from Hong Kong, had a difficult time breaking into Hollywood back when Bruce Lee was the dominant force in the industry. He got his start in the film industry working as a stuntman. In an era before CGI, he became well known for risking his life to do dangerous stunts on camera.

In his autobiography, he admits to liking the traditional Chinese garment worn by Chinese women. He was drawn to them because of the brightness of their pale pink and blue hues. The actor found particular appeal in the garments’ distinctive styles. Yet the major reason he dressed like a woman, was that he wanted to stand out from the crowd of regular men.

He also added in his book, saying, “I learned in America that most successful artists develop a signature style. Once you’ve found a special look and make it your own, you leave an impression on your audience and no one will ever forget you.” It was important for Chan to have an appearance that set him apart from the crowd so that his audience would recognize him immediately. Furthermore, he underlines the need to develop one’s own style as an actor in Hollywood, where many eyes are always upon you.
The martial artist cum actor’s unique acting skill
Hollywood has entered new periods of time thanks to deviations from the norm. In the 1970s, martial arts films flourished thanks to Bruce Lee’s cinematic introduction of the genre. In subsequent decades, however, artists like Jackie Chan integrated comedic timing into their martial arts portrayals.

When it comes to combining humor with martial arts, Jackie Chan was a trailblazer, ushering in a new era of comedic martial arts films. The actor wished such films had more style and humor, resulting in films like ‘Rush Hour’, as a direct result of this phenomenon. Despite making the protagonist appear goofy, there were a decent amount of exciting fights as well, to keep audiences hooked.
