Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter was a long and drawn-out process. Beginning in April of last year, Musk had purchased over nine percent of Twitter’s shares, according to NBC News. He then offered to purchase the company at $54.20 per share. Elon Musk sought to apply free speech principles to the platform. Twitter, now rechristened X, accepted his offer by the end of that month. All is far from well, though. One glitch drew the ire of Dave Portnoy.

Dave Portnoy, owner of Barstool Sports, was admittedly a fan of Elon Musk and rooted for his Twitter takeover. He claimed to love Musk’s policy of “If I don’t like you, I will buy you.” Portnoy believed Musk would be good for the platform. Interestingly, Musk laid off more than half of Twitter’s payroll following his takeover. The exact number is closer to 80 percent. Portnoy was left unhappy with the result of the platform’s content moderation policies on this occasion.

Dave Portnoy asks for an escalation

Dave Portnoy referred to a mysterious account @didsmittyshowup. The name associated with the account is the question “Did Smitty Show Up To Work Today?” Responses to said question constitute the one word. The owner of the account posts either a “yes” or a “no” every day starting from August 30 of this year. Portnoy raised the issue on his X handle while tagging Elon Musk.

Dave Portnoy was frustrated upon learning one response, “no,” could not be repeated. He shared a screenshot of the same from Wednesday. Portnoy thought the denial of permission was a mistake and asked for the matter to be escalated. He wrote, “Hey @elonmusk I think this is a mistake. This mysterious account @didsmittyshowup won’t let it post todays update of ‘no’ because it thinks saying no over and over is a mistake. It’s not a mistake. Its a new day just same answer. Please escalate.” Known for not holding back on his opinion, this is not the first time Portnoy called out Musk.

Different complaint from a month earlier

A month back, Portnoy drew the attention of Tesla CEO Musk regarding another ‘glitch’ on the platform. He was unable to change his profile picture. Portnoy shared a screengrab where he was denied permission to make said edit. Incidentally, that remains his profile picture till now. Portnoy wrote on that occasion, “Dear @elonmusk I’d like to change my profile picture please. Kinda bad mojo at this point.”

It is unknown whether Musk responded to El Presidente personally. The message adjoining the denial of permission revealed Portnoy’s account was under review. With that being the case, no changes to his name or profile picture would be permitted for the duration of the review period. In the fresh incident, Musk has yet to respond to Portnoy. It remains to be seen if he does.
