The 2023/24 Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup has kickstarted its 58th season with the top-tier alpine skiing legends. After a level-pegging grand slalom competition on October 28, the women are back under the mystic northern lights. At Levi, the slalom event has begun and the alpine GOAT Mikaela Shiffrin has made her entry already. But a worrisome outcome turned heads. 

As the women skiers prepared to grace the slopes, the hardship caught them hard. In a game like this, going downhill and landing smoothly isn’t an effortless task. The world has seen several legendary skiers facing setbacks and failing to finish. In the recent update that surfaced, the story is somewhat similar.

Alpine Ski slalom has a shaky start

Though the US skiers had just kicked off, while the other nations have started off with their stellar displays. But the number of DNF participants concerned the ski world. The countries include Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, France and Korea. A total of almost 12 competitors failed to make their individual mark this time.

As more contenders are prepping up for the day, the US Alpine Ski Team is keeping the world updated. Having said so, getting a DNF title isn’t uncommon for pro-skiers too. There have been instances when the world witnessed falls and tumbles or just abrupt pauses.

Along a similar line, the alpine skiing GOAT had faced her first World champ ‘disappointment’ early this year. The reason was nothing but a DNF.

Mikaela Shiffrin’s disappointment

In February, at the 2023 FIS Alpine Ski World Championships, the 28-year-old faced a DNF. It was a slalom event, and she was left with just three gates. With just an inch away from victory, she lost balance and stopped.

After a disheartening finish, Shiffrin said, “I guess the first thing is, of course, I’m disappointed not to finish and not to get a medal, but I’m also quite excited because I was skiing really well.” She also accepted the fact that the tough discipline of slalom doesn’t leave a room for the second error. Since the 28-year-old started with some modifications in mind, the DNF left her sad.

Now, as the women’s slalom event kick started, Shiffrin lost her second opportunity to earn the first spot. Having given up her position to Petra Vlhova.
