The 15-year-old Russian skater, Kamila Valieva, has landed in some serious doping controversy. She is a star skater and one of the top favorites in the women’s single skating short program at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. The Russian skater was tested on December 25 during her National Championship, but by the time her test results were revealed on February 8th, she had already performed at Beijing Winter Olympics. In her defense, she argued her positive drug test was because of a mix-up with her grandfather’s heart medication.

However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has allowed her to compete in tonight’s women’s single figure skating event as the three judges in the panel are going forward with the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) in their decision to lift her ban.

Kamila Valieva tests positive

The skater got indulged in a controversy after it was revealed that they have tested her positive for trimetazidine in her system. It’s a heart medication that is banned in sports because of its endurance-increasing qualities.

When questioned about the current controversy and the fact that she was allowed to participate in the Olympics, Kamila Valieva said, “These (past few) days have been very difficult for me. It’s as if I don’t have any emotions left. I am happy but at the same time I am emotionally tired.”

The global backlash from athletes and officials

The athletes and officials all over the world are condemning CAS’s decision to let Valieva compete in the Olympics. In their defense, CAS has argued that suspending her at such an important moment of her career would cause her irreparable damage. However, if Valieva manages a position on the podium in women’s single figure skating short program, they will not hold the medal ceremony during the Winter Games.

Due to the controversy created by the Russian skater’s positive test, the medal ceremony of the figure skating team event has also been postponed. The International Olympic Committee’s chairperson of the disciplinary commission, Denis Oswald, said, “We want to allocate the medal to the right person.”?
